Adelaide to Barossa Valley EV Route Planner: Charging Stops and Timing
Published April 2026
Adelaide to the Barossa Valley is around 70 km via Gawler on the Sturt Highway. It's one of the shorter day-trip drives from an Australian capital city, and most modern EVs cover it without touching a charger. But the Barossa is a wine region, which means you're likely doing a loop, stopping at multiple places over several hours, and then driving home. Knowing where to top up during the day makes the whole thing much more relaxed.
Do you need to stop between Adelaide and the Barossa?
For most EVs, no. Adelaide to Nuriootpa is about 70 km. Even a smaller-battery car like the MG ZS EV handles this on a single charge with room to spare. Leave Adelaide with 40% or more and you'll arrive without any concern.
If you're starting very low on charge, under 15%, Gawler sits around 40 km from Adelaide and has multiple Chargefox-operated chargers including a 120 kW DC unit at the Homemaker Centre. A 10-minute stop there adds more than enough range for the remaining 30 km into the Barossa. Check chargers in Gawler before leaving if you think you might need it.
Charging in Nuriootpa
Nuriootpa is the commercial centre of the Barossa and has the best fast-charging options in the region. Both stations are on Murray Street in the town centre:
- RAA Charge at Barossa Central Shopping Centre, 1 Murray Street: 150 kW DC rapid charger with 2 CCS2 ports, on the Chargefox platform. This was the first rapid charger RAA Charge opened in South Australia, launching in July 2023. Pricing is around 59c/kWh standard rate.
- NRMA at Soldiers Memorial Hall, Murray Street: 4 DC fast-charging bays, centrally located near public toilets and shops.
A 20-minute stop at the RAA Charge rapid charger during a lunch break is enough to top up for the 70 km return to Adelaide. You don't need to plan around it much. Check chargers in Nuriootpa for current availability before you arrive.
Charging in Tanunda
Tanunda is about 5 km south of Nuriootpa and has one public fast charger:
- NRMA at Barossa Visitor Centre, 68 Murray Street: 2 DC fast-charging bays in the rear car park, accessed via Julius Street. Free parking while charging. A useful spot if you're starting your Barossa visit in Tanunda rather than Nuriootpa.
There is no Tesla Supercharger in Tanunda or anywhere else in the Barossa Valley as of early 2026. Some winery accommodations have Tesla Destination Chargers, but these are for overnight guests and are not fast DC options for day visitors.
Check chargers in Tanunda to see what's available on the day.
Winery touring by EV
Distances between Barossa wineries are short, usually 5 to 20 km. A full day of winery-hopping around Tanunda, Nuriootpa, and Angaston might add 30 to 50 km on top of the drive from Adelaide. That's well within what any modern EV handles.
The practical move is to charge during lunch. Both fast charger sites in Nuriootpa are in the town centre, walking distance from cafes. A 20 to 30 minute charge while you eat tops you up without adding anything to your day. You'll leave Nuriootpa with a full or near-full charge and can drive straight back to Adelaide.
If you're staying overnight, check whether your accommodation has a Type 2 AC charger or even a standard power outlet. Overnight AC charging at 7 kW leaves you with a full battery in the morning without needing to plan any stops.
Use the journey planner to map the full Adelaide to Barossa route and check charger availability for your connector type before you leave.
Apps and networks to download first
The two apps to have ready before you go are Chargefox and the NRMA app. RAA Charge stations run on the Chargefox platform, so one app covers both RAA Charge and the wider Chargefox network across South Australia. NRMA chargers in Tanunda and Nuriootpa use the NRMA app. RAA members get discounted rates on RAA Charge stations, so link your membership in the Chargefox app before the trip.
There is no Evie Networks station on this route. The nearest Tesla Supercharger is in Adelaide CBD on Franklin Street, not in the Barossa. Download both apps before you leave Adelaide, and you're covered for everything on the route.
