Hobart to Launceston EV Route Planner: Tasmania's Easiest EV Drive

Published April 2026

Hobart to Launceston is Tasmania's main highway run. Around 200 km through quiet sheep country on the Midland Highway. It's one of the shortest intercity EV drives in Australia, and most modern EVs complete it without charging at all. Leave Hobart fully charged and you'll arrive in Launceston with 30–40% to spare.

Can you make it without stopping?

If your EV has 250 km or more of real-world highway range and you leave fully charged, you'll arrive in Launceston comfortably. At the 100 km/h speed limit with air conditioning, most 60 kWh+ EVs manage this trip easily. Smaller-battery EVs (the Nissan Leaf 40 kWh, older MG ZS EV) should plan a stop at Oatlands or Campbell Town rather than risk arriving on a low charge.

Cold weather in winter affects range noticeably. Tasmania's midlands can be genuinely cold, with frost on the paddocks and the heater running hard. If you're driving in winter with a smaller battery, add an extra 15–20% to your consumption estimate and plan accordingly.

Charging stops along the Midland Highway

  • Oatlands (~85 km from Hobart): A heritage-listed Georgian town with the largest collection of colonial sandstone buildings in Australia. Worth stopping for more than just the charger. Charger options in and around the main street.
  • Campbell Town (~130 km from Hobart): Another historic midlands town on the Heritage Highway. Charger access here means you arrive at Launceston with a proper margin if you've been running lower than planned.
  • Launceston (~200 km from Hobart): Good fast-charging infrastructure in the city centre and at shopping precincts. Once you're in Launceston, finding a charger is straightforward.

Why the Midland Highway suits EVs

The highway is relatively flat through the midlands, and the 100 km/h speed limit is consistent. There are no significant mountain passes or extreme elevation changes. This is about as predictable as highway driving gets. No surprises, and real-world consumption aligns closely with what the journey planner will estimate.

Tasmania as an EV destination

The Hobart–Launceston run is often just the start of a Tasmanian EV trip. From Launceston, you're well-positioned for the Tamar Valley wine region and the north coast. From Hobart, the Huon Valley, the Derwent Valley, and the east coast are all within comfortable day-trip range. Tasmania's compact geography means most of the island is accessible from these two centres without any single leg exceeding 200–250 km.

The east coast (Swansea, Bicheno, Coles Bay) is increasingly popular and charger access there has improved, though it's thinner than the main highway corridor. Freycinet National Park (Coles Bay) is a particular consideration: the road into the park is the end of the line, so you need enough charge to get there and back. Use the journey planner to check the full loop before heading east.

Timing

  • Driving time: ~2–2.5 hours at typical speeds
  • With a stop at Oatlands or Campbell Town: add 20–30 minutes
  • Total: 2–3 hours, a comfortable half-morning

This is about as easy as intercity EV driving gets in Australia. If you're renting an EV in Tasmania for the first time, start with this one. It'll show you how simple EV travel can be when the distances are sensible.
