Sydney South Coast EV Route Planner: Grand Pacific Drive to Batemans Bay

Published April 2026

The Grand Pacific Drive down to Batemans Bay is one of the best weekend EV trips from Sydney. At around 290 km via the Royal National Park, Sea Cliff Bridge, and Princes Highway, it's a short enough trip that most modern EVs can handle it with a single stop or none at all. The drive through the national park and over the Sea Cliff Bridge near Wollongong is one of the better approaches to the South Coast, and genuinely worth taking your time on.

Charging stops along the route

  • Wollongong (~80 km from Sydney): The first major town south of Sydney with fast-charging options. Not essential if you're leaving Sydney fully charged, but worth a quick top-up if you want extra margin for the quieter section between Nowra and Batemans Bay.
  • Kiama (~120 km from Sydney): Destination chargers here, useful for a slower stop. Kiama is worth a detour for the blowhole and the town centre, but it's not a fast DC charging hub.
  • Nowra (~170 km from Sydney): The key fast-charging stop on this route, especially if you're planning to continue south beyond Batemans Bay. Charge here to ensure you have range for the Nowra–Batemans Bay leg and any exploration once you arrive.
  • Batemans Bay (~290 km from Sydney): Good fast-charging options in and around the town centre. You'll arrive here ready to explore, not scrambling for a charger.

The stretch between Nowra and Batemans Bay (~120 km) has limited fast-charging options. Leave Nowra with 50% or more to cover this leg comfortably, particularly if you plan to drive around Batemans Bay and surrounds once you arrive.

The Sea Cliff Bridge section

The route through the Royal National Park and over the Sea Cliff Bridge between Stanwell Park and Clifton is one of the highlights of this drive. The road winds through the park and along the cliffside before reaching Wollongong. The combination of lower speed limits, some elevation change, and lots of stops for lookouts means this section takes longer than the map suggests. Budget an extra 30–45 minutes compared to what navigation apps will tell you. The battery impact is modest.

How many stops and how long?

  • Driving time: ~4 hours direct, longer with the Grand Pacific Drive route and stops
  • Most EVs: 1 stop at Nowra (20–30 minutes)
  • Long-range EVs: optional stop or none at all
  • Total with stops and the scenic detours: budget 5–6 hours

Extending south of Batemans Bay

If you're continuing to Narooma (~380 km from Sydney), Eden (~520 km), or further along the Sapphire Coast, charge fully at Batemans Bay before leaving. The Princes Highway south of Batemans Bay has fewer fast-charging options than the corridor north of it. Narooma and Merimbula both have chargers; Eden has options as well. Use the journey planner to verify what's available for your specific vehicle and connector type before heading further south.

Charging strategy

Leave Sydney fully charged. Take the Grand Pacific Drive if you're not in a rush. The lower speeds mean better efficiency through that section anyway. Top up at Nowra if your battery is below 50%, and arrive at Batemans Bay with room to explore. This is a genuinely easy EV weekend trip. The range anxiety that might come to mind when planning it usually evaporates once you're on the road.
