Sydney to Canberra EV Route: Most EVs Make It Non-Stop — Charging Guide

Updated March 2026

Sydney to Canberra is one of the easiest interstate EV trips you can do in Australia. The distance via the Hume Highway (M31) and Federal Highway is around 280–290 km, well within the single-charge range of most modern EVs. For newer long-range vehicles, this is a straight shot with no charging needed. For others, Goulburn sits conveniently at the ~200 km mark and gives you a solid mid-route option if you want it.

Can you make it without stopping?

If your EV has a real-world highway range of 350 km or more and you leave Sydney fully charged, yes, you'll arrive in Canberra with a comfortable margin. At 110 km/h with air conditioning, most 70–80 kWh battery EVs land comfortably. Smaller-battery vehicles (real-world range of 250–300 km) should plan a stop at Goulburn, particularly in cold weather or if driving at higher speeds. Arriving with 10% is not a plan. It's a gamble.

Goulburn: the natural mid-point

At around 200 km from Sydney, Goulburn sits right where you'd want a stop to exist. It has multiple fast-charging options in and around the town centre, useful both for drivers who need to top up and for anyone who wants a coffee and a break before the final 90 km run to Canberra. If you're stopping here to charge, you typically don't need to fill to 100%. Topping up to 60–70% is more than enough to reach Canberra comfortably.

The elevation factor

Canberra sits at around 580 metres elevation. The climb through the Southern Tablelands on the Federal Highway isn't dramatic, but it does use slightly more energy than flat highway driving. The practical effect: if your battery is below 30% approaching Goulburn and you skip the charge, you'll arrive in Canberra lower than you might expect. The return leg to Sydney is a little more efficient, as gravity works in your favour on the way down.

Charging in Canberra

Canberra is well-served for charging once you're there. As the national capital, it has good coverage from multiple networks across the city, including shopping centres, car parks, and destination chargers are easy to find. If you arrive and need to charge before your return trip, you'll have no trouble finding a fast charger. Use the journey planner or station map to find what's nearest to where you're staying.

Timing

  • Driving time: ~3–3.5 hours at typical speeds
  • If stopping at Goulburn: add 20–30 minutes for a top-up
  • Total: 3–4 hours, a very manageable half-day trip

This is genuinely one of those EV trips that ends up being less stressful than a petrol drive, simply because the range anxiety people anticipate usually turns out to be unfounded once they've done it.
